Autumn

This is the vase I got from Kajalakoti as a goodbye present. I am continuing this project, but in another format. At the moment I am looking for the old folks home in Helsinki where I will be doing my final work for my MA. Pysähdy Kajalakodissa as a project is over, even thought I have promised and want to stop by every now and then. Continuation is also a way to say goodbye.

Avoimet Ovet

On the last day I was at Kajalakoti, there was the Open House. Surprisingly for all of us there were very many visitors. Most people got lunch and afterwards there was also coffee and cake served. In the gallery there were icons by a local artist and handicraft sold. I had made a cognitive map of the place which all the visitors got. My idea was that it could encourage people to get to know the place and maybe also see things and do things that they wouldnt have done without the map. I had made two small installations, in the library you could listen to recordings of a song from Kajalakoti and in one of the TV rooms there was a picture installation of hands. I also had a performance in the big dining room. The performance was simply made of pictures and text and it lasted a bit more than half an hour. There was hardly enough people for everybody and I got a choke attack, but apart from that it was a good experience. How to end a project which has been anounced to be a process? How to avoid longlasting goodbuys?

apple

I am very much here in Kajalakoti even though I have not been writing the blog actively lately. I am preparing some things for the open day and then I am living life in Kajalakoti like it is a very natural thing to do. Today I had some technical problems with my apple mac. Now the whole room smells of apples after I picked apples. Even though I am working towards the open house, it feels very natural to go and sit and wait for the next meal half an hour before it is served. This I and many others do even though we know for sure that the food will come exact on time.

Hairdresser in your living room

I feel like at home and that I have a place here. Quit relaxed actually. Today was the hairdresser here, sometimes my haidresser friend come to my home to cut my hair as well. Life is convenient that way, when all that you need is offered just outside your bedroom.

Walking video

I am confused in the way that I feel that the world goes faster than I am able to catch on to. On thursday I lost my wallet with drivers license, visa card, student card and all my other identity giving papers, yesterday I arrived here and just now I noticed that I have taken wrong cord, so that I am not able to put pictures into the computer. I have no idea if these two losses has anything to do with each other, but it might make sense that as long as my picture identities are lost, I am not able to publish other faces. Since I have a video camera, I decided to make a faceless video.

It is though the joy of seeing the same faces that has struck me today. We have mostly been catching up on what has happened during the summer, how much it has been raining. And about changes. When I see someone, we tend to repeat that nothing has really changed. While turning slowly the corner in the corridor today one person said "ah, it looks the same way as before." That might be true on a general level, but still what makes this day interesting are the changes that are not general. Such as that the table in the middle room has been turned around, getting to know why somebody has a hurt arm, look at the new names on the signs and hearing the voice have become slower. We dont die in the order we are born. Today the fields just in front of Kajalakoti are being cut and tomorrow the autumn starts.

The sweet wish of a summer giving lots of energy to the next year has turned into happiness that the autumn has arrived. Except for those that are on sick leave, the permanent workers are all here. It seems as this makes Kajalakoti more stable. Todays one of the new people here said that as long as she behaves as a good girl here, she will be ok.

Back Again

This evening I came to Kajalakoti to stay here for the last week. So far I have mostly prepared my room/office and made myself at home once again. Marking my territory. And then I have had to write some applications concerning other things. Now when that is done, I feel quite excited to be here. The week will end in the "open day" at Kajalakoti, where you all are off course welcome. Therefore this week will be focused on preparing for that in another way than last time I was here. The little time I spent here so far, made me feel that there has happen a lot of changes, while absolutely nothing has changed. I often get that feeling when I come back to places.

Kiitos tästä ajasta/Thank you for this time

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for this time.
My father picked me up at Kajalakoti today.

I am happy to notice that this is a living project, that I get response both in the blog and in real life. (When it comes to comments, I would suggest everybody to read the comments under the chair from Yrjö and Edwin. Maybe it is a start of a longer communication. Or maybe it is an end.) Feel free to comment, skip or stop.

I often read bits and pieces of a book. Or mainly look at the pictures.

Enjoy the ancient and new roads this summer!.

Semmotis/Like that

Semmottis

Vaikka tänään menisitkin istumaan oikealle tuolille iltapalalla, voit unohtaa paikkasi huomenna.

Miten uudet ihmiset tulevat käyttäytymään ja missä he tulevat istumaan aterioilla?

Olen pakkaamassa.

Like that
”Nyt on taas ilta tullut”(So now has night once again come) someone said to me at 3:30 pm today after supper time.

”Ilta tulee taas”(Night comes once again) another person said to me at 6:30 pm today after evening meal time.

Even if you today went to sit in your right chair for evening meal, you might forget your place tomorrow.

When someone goes to sit in a wrong chair because they forgot were they place is or maybe just wants to sit in a new place, there is always a moment of confusion. Some of us are waiting for an expert(someone that works here) to get the person on the right track, some are using the situation to have a small fight, one person leaves because of an uncomfortable situation, some people look down and others try to turn it into a joyfull moment.

How will the new people behave and where will they sit during the meals? It is not planned and still there will be a place. It is common for visitors to be unsure of how it is apropriate to behave. Is it ok that I walk in this hallway? Can I visit at this time? Can I sit beside my mother while she eat? If not you, who else should walk, visit or sit?

”I have never been at a place where there are so many people, it is so interesting to observe.” Said the lady that arrived yesterday. I have been observing as well, but today I for the first time fell asleep in the rocking chair while all the interesting people was hanging around. The magic two weeks has passed and from now on I could start knowing how I would make Kajalakoti my home. If I was to do that, I wished that I could fall asleep many times in the common area and have enough time to make it my home before I was off to tomorrowland.

These are words that drown into the paper soup.
These are words that remain.
These are words that have wings.

I am packing.

Another voice

Here is the speech Marjatta Halkilahti had for the people that came to Kajalakoti for the opening of Hiidentie:

tervetuloa kajalakotiin

minulla on kädessani kortteja.. lippusia.. lappusia
näissä se mitä teille aion sanoa

ensimmäisessä on teemani
oikeastaan teemani kaikkeen
kaikkeen tässä elämässä

se on

kaikella on aikansa
kaikella on rajansa
ja kaikella on tarkoituksensa

kaikella on aikansa

minä olen marjatta halkilahti
tämän talon johtaja
johtaja vuodesta 1967
nyt kesäkuun 1 päivänä alkoi neljäskymmenes toinen työvuosi

se on mieletön aika
ja se on sikälikin aika erikoista että
kun tämä talo
tämä kajalakoti tänä vuonna täyttää 70 vuotta niin
on vaan todettava että
minähän olen yli puolet tämän talon toiminta-ajasta ollut täällä

mutta
mihinkäs minä kotoani lähtisin?

minulla on ollut ja on upeat työkaverit
.. työntekijät jotka tätä vanhainkotimaailmaa.. tätä
jokapäiväistä elämäämme kanssani toteuttavat

kaikella on rajansa

talo siis täyttää tänä vuonna 70 vuotta
sitä juhlitaan
6.12.2008
ilmeisesti ihan vaan kotipiirissä

meillä on aihetta syntymäpäivään mutta
meillä on myös hautajaiset
ehkä minun läksiäisenikin

eläkkeellehän minulla on mahdollisuus heittäytyä 1. joulukuuta
siis tänä vuonna
jos haluan
en tiedä vielä

hautajaiset meillä on siksi että
tämä talo liukuu 1.1.2009 uuden suuren salon syliin
ja toimii jatkossa yhtenä salon kaupungin vanhuspalvelupaikoista

moni asia muuttuu
moni asia säilyy

kaikella on tarkoituksensa

kun kristina junttila ensimmäisen kerran soitti
tänne kajalakotiin
niin ensimmäisestä soitosta ajattelin että
no voivoi
mikähän tämäkin juttu nyt oikein on?
.. mutta että.. mielenkiintoiselta vaikuttaa
ja eihän tässä nyt muuta voi sanoakaan
kuin että mielenkiintoista
todella mielenkiintoista

tässä tilanteessa kun eletään näitä salo2009 kuvioita
niin synnytystuskiakin on odotettavissa
aina välillä.. eteemme heitetään uhkakuvia
uhkakuvia siitä että
salon alueen vanhainkodit liu`utetaan

Muistoja/Memories

Uneksittuja muistoja paikasta, jossa olet elänyt

Se on yleensä maatila. Noin 20 lehmeää, muutama hevonen ja sinä olet yksi pellolla työskentelevistä lapsista. Sitten juokset järveen uimaan. Iltaisin kokoonnutte sisälle. Muistojesi paikasta tulee unelma.

Kajala oli maatila. Vuonna 1938 Kertun mies oli täällä auttamassa rakentamaan vasemmalla olevaa isoa valkoista rakennusta. Tänä päivänä Kerttu asuu samassa talossa. Siitä tuli Kajalan vanhainkoti. Siellä on monia huoneita. Ikkunalaudoilla on krysanteemeja ja seinillä ilmakuva maatilasta. Äitini ei koskaan elänyt maatilalla, mutta jopa hänellä on ilmasta otettu kuva maatilasta roikkumassa työhuoneensa seinällä.

Katselen lävitse vanhoja sanomalehtiartikkeleita Kajalakodista. Vanhassa sanomalehdessä on tietty tuoksu. Kuten paikoissakin. Tuoksu harmaista hiuksista, vastaleivotusta pullasta, valkaisuaineesta, saunasta, pissasta, liikkumattomista kehoista, sitruunasta, sisätilasta, desinfioinnista, lääkkeistä, sokerista, kahvista, lämpimästä ruuasta ja vastapestystä.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dream memories of the place you have lived

It usually is a farm. Around 20 cows, a couple of horses and you are one of ten kids working on the field. Afterwards you run to the lake and have a swim. In the evenings you gather inside. The place of your memories becomes a dream.

Kajala was a farm. In 1938 Kerttus husband was here helping to build the big white building on the left. Today she lives in the same building. It became Kajala old folks home. There are many rooms. On the window shelves there are chrysantemums and on the walls there is a picture taken from above of a farm. My mother never herself lived at the family farm, but even she has a picture taken from above of a farm hanging in her work room.

I just looked through old newspaper articles of Kajalakoti. Old newspaper has a certain smell. Places do as well. The smell of grey hair, newly baked buns, clorine, sauna, pee, unmovable bodies, lemon, inside, desinfection, medicine, sugar, coffee, warm food and newly washed.

Arvostaa/Respect

Arvostaa.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Respect. The original meaning in latin of the word respect is ”to look twice”. Only by seeing I can show respect. But can it also be to show respect to not see? Should I keep on throwing the ball to those who can not catch it? Is the artist the one that should be seen or see herself? Should the worker only see those that live here and not be seen herself?

As I have been here for a while I have now found a rythm and a way of moving in Kajalakoti that I repeat. My face is known and I am not seen so much. I am not seen as the young person eating among the elder. I just eat. I just take pictures. At the same time I am seeing differently than in the start. More than seeing this has been a day of doing. (misunderstand me right: I value doing first of all and I really think that respect is shown through your actions)

At this moment I feel like after a day at work as an activator at an institution:
First I greet the people, we eat together, I prepare the room for movement class, I gather the people, I lead the movements, we eat together, check email, gather people, help my friend with his art workshop, clean after workshop, we eat together, prepare my blog, explain my work to some journalists and I end the day by writing in my blog. In between I take photos, give away photos, check on some people and chat in the hallway.

I have worked as an activator, teacher and instructor in different institutions so this is not new for me, and it is therefore also an easy role for me to take. And more than that I find it enjoyable and important work. But what am I activating this time? Why would I activate somebody at their home?

I came here to ask how it feels to live in an old folks home and slowly I am making it to become my workplace. Is Kajalakoti more of a workplace or is it a home? In my situation it is difficult to not make it my workplace when I am here for so long. While visiting my grandmothers at institutions it was easy to just hang around. Now I have got relationship to many people and at the same time I loose personal relationships. Why shouldnt I allow myself to hang around with only the same people? While getting sucked into pleasing or activating everybody, I fade away from personal relationships and into a public place. I feel empathy for my grandmother while the institution becomes an endless workplace.

Are we merely living in somebodies workplace?

Conversation:
"should we yell for help?" "what for?" "to get the workers to come here for a while."

Today I have met two new people in the hallway who just moved here. Walking in the labyrinths, not knowing where to step. I wonder if those routes will become daily steps? For sure they will feel different from any of the other peoples steps.

Hitting

Who are we to tell older people not to hit?
